Learning Italian spelling while having fun

MB and MP through drawing, riddles and tombola

Spelling becomes easier when children can see, hear, say and play with words.

In this lesson, we focused on one simple but important rule: before B and P, Italian uses M.

So children practised words such as:

MB: bambino, bambola, ombrello, tamburo
MP: lampada, lampione, temporale, campanello

Instead of memorising the rule passively, they explored it through drawing, repetition, riddles and a bingo-style game.

Listening to and repeating sounds

Children repeated MB and MP words in different voices: slowly, quickly, quietly and in a funny voice.

Writing and drawing

Children created their own illustrated word bank by drawing and labelling MB and MP words. Children who were ready for an extra challenge also wrote simple sentences using their chosen words.

This means that, even in a group lesson, each child can work at the right level: some focus on recognising and spelling the words, while others begin to use them creatively in short written sentences.

Spelling through games

Children practised MB and MP words through simple Italian riddles and a tombola-style game.

By turning spelling practice into a game, children had to listen carefully, recognise the words and remember their meaning — without feeling like they were doing a traditional exercise.

Games make repetition feel natural and enjoyable. They help children stay engaged, take part with confidence and practise the same spelling pattern several times in a fun and effortless way.
